이 교재는 미국의 사회와 문화를 이해하고자 하는 학생들에게 더 깊이 미국을 이해하는 계기를 마련하는 길잡이 역할을 해줄 것이다. 교재는 지나치게 현대적이고 단편적인 현상에 집중되지는 않도록 하였다. 그 대신 식민지 개척 이래 서부로의 영토 확장이라는 지리공간적인 차원과 함께 시간·문화적 차원, 즉 미국역사의 주요 시기들에 형성되어 오늘날의 미국적 가치들의 근간을 이루는 정신적·문화적 지표들을 살펴볼 수 있도록 자료들을 구성하였다.
